With temperatures near zero,
\nI try to play the hero,
\nintent to go outside and feed the birds.
\nThe turkey is most foul,
\nunlike the sacred owl,
\nan animal too ugly for mere words.
\nWith face most like a vulture
\nand raised within a culture
\nwhose habits are to preen and eat and shit,
\nthe animal shows not a shred
\nof care for humans, live or dead,
\nand yet, somehow I seem to feel for it.
\nAnd so, dressed like a clown,
\nin jacket filled with down,
\nI brave the dreaded wind chill like a champ.
\nThey’ll eat their scattered food,
\nwith scrapes amongst the brood,
